Wow!!.....what a week to be living in Spain. I´ve only just recovered from the celebrations surrounding Spain´s first ever World Cup win. The excitement on that historic Sunday was indescribable, and you could have cut the tension with a knife during the build-up to the game. With so many Dutch residents, and tourists here, the local Dutch bars were also packed with people draped in orange, so the atmosphere was electric........ !! The week had started well, when Rafael Nadal, won the mens singles at Wimbledon...... a good omen for the Spanish, as he also won Wimbledon two years ago when Spain won the European Championships........Could history repeat itself?? There was the little matter of a Wednesday semi-final with the German´s to negotiate first..... no easy task, as they had scored four goals in each of their previous two victories against England and Argentina......however, right from kick-off....... Spain took the game by the throat, and didn´t let go.......in the end more than deserving their 1-0 victory which took them into their first World Cup Final.
So the scene was set........ Torn between whether to watch on the big screen in Benidorm...... or stick to previous form, and watch in my favourite Spanish bar in Altea....... Paola´s......we opted for the latter, and packed in with all the other Spanish fans...... and other nationalities who had nailed their allegiance firmly to Spain´s flag for the night. As for the match..... the less said about the Netherland´s team tactics the better. I know they were in their third World Cup Final..... without actually winning it, so they were desperate to succeed this time, however they deserved absolutely nothing for their cynical, dirty, bruising performance, which left most neutrals appalled. Their stifling tactics kept the more fluid Spanish team at bay for 90 minutes........ then deep into extra time, when everyone had virtually accepted the dreaded penalty shoot-out..... up popped Andres Iniesta....... to strike the ball into the back of the Dutch net, send the whole nation into a frenzy, and put himself firmly into the record books. I couldn´t help but get emotional seeing the Spanish captain and goalkeeper... Iker Casillas sobbing as the referee went to blow the final whistle............magical.... it meant so much to each every one of this fantastic set of players. And then.........the celebrations. Anyone who knows anything about Spain and it´s inhabitants is aware that they don´t need an excuse for a party....... and this must count as one of the greatest reasons ever, so they went absolutely MAD!! Car horns, trumpets, drums, singing, jumping on top of buses, cars, Guardia Civil vehicles, and diving into any available fountain or stretch of water they came across were some of the activities which went on all throught the night, and well into Monday morning........ i think i got about 2 hours sleep...... but wouldn´t have missed it for the world...... Spain´s World Cup victory.... and i was in Spain to witness it..... Fantastic!!
With Summer now in full swing...... temperatures got close to 40 degrees last week...... the party continues... with life taking place out on the streets, in the bars, cafes, restaurants, beaches and shady parks. Who wants to be cooped up inside at this time of year??... even if the aircon is set to cold. Don´t forget the gym though...... we´re here throughout the season..... air-conditioned and awaiting your visit. The temptation is to forget about exercise in the heat.... preferring a cool glass of beer, mojito, or iced white wine...... all empty calories, which need burning off....... otherwise you´ll soon see wobbly bits appearing. Why not come and do a class........ Pilates is suspended for the Summer, but we still have loads of classes designed to burn off the extra calories and keep you in tip-top beach shape. Check out the timetable and book yourselves in.
Hasta Pronto Amigos
